Quilts Japan: The 17th Quilt Nihon features 39 award-winning quilts from the biennial competition of the Japanese Handicraft Instructor's Association (@jhia_org). In this exhibition, visitors have the chance to see traditional and modern quilts. JHIA defines traditional quilts as those that are inspired and based on traditional ideas, while contemporary quilts demonstrate originality and independent ideas. Parallels can be drawn between traditional Japanese quilts and traditional American quilting practices, including thick borders and designs structured by blocks.

Come see them in person from now until October 10th at @visionsmuseum in @artsdistrictlibertystation.

Kathleen has been creating with cloth since the fifth grade, later earning an applied design degree from San Diego State University. She has previously served on the Visions Board (2001-2004) and acted as a regional representative and exhibitions committee member for Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). Kathleen’s work is exhibited nationally and internationally, published in numerous books and publications, and displayed in public and private collections. Her signature fused and machine raw edge applique technique makes quilters from all over recognize a Kathleen McCabe quilt.

Snapshots of Guatemala Highlands by Kathleen McCabe
In this exhibit, McCabe’s fine art quilts depict memories of her experiences visiting Guatemala Highlands, highlighting the perspective of a visitor from one culture visiting another culture. The rich textile traditions of Guatemala, originating largely from its many indigenous communities, are incorporated into these artworks that you won't want to miss!

Soft Architectures of the Sea by Marita Setas Ferro
This exhibition presents interactive textile sculptures as material reflections on marine ecosystems, care, and environmental precarity. Visitors are invited to touch these sculptures that invite proximity and embodied response, allowing tactility, softness, and vulnerability to operate as forms of knowledge. In this free program, participants will learn how to make Guatemalan worry dolls, a craft originating in the Guatemalan highlands. This region is the focal point of "Snapshots of Guatemala Highlands", a quilt exhibition by local artist Kathleen McCabe, who will be present alongside her display. Participants will also get the chance to hear from Guatemalan-American artist @art_by_sontay, who will speak with visitors during the program and share about her art practice.
