OPEN THIS DOOR

For Linda Waddle, color has a physical presence. Her reaction to color is visceral. “Color makes me salivate,” Linda explains, “it’s like food for my spirit”. To fully express her love of color, she dyes her own fabrics, layering techniques and embracing whatever results. In her work the process provides at least as much motivation as the product. The “doing” is what keeps her going back to her dye studio. Her goal is to challenge herself in the process to create a pleasing yet complex and intriguing piece that challenges the viewer.

In Open This Door, Waddle uses doors as portals through which we examine our life’s struggles and choices. The colors of the doors, well outside our ordinary experience, invite us into worlds of our own imagination. A closed door with no visible handle, perhaps awaiting the slightest nudge. It looks solid and heavy, but perhaps it responds to the breath of a whisper. Two quilts from a series of 6 depict the same door in varying degrees of abstraction, offering an examination of doors opened, and those unopened, during life’s journey. An abstract portal launches us into the sea. And is the heart sheltered by the trees? Or pierced by limbs?

To achieve these thought-provoking works, Linda works largely in whole cloth and uses multiple techniques, including dye painting, stenciling, stamping, screen printing, and rusting. An experienced teacher and avid student, she has studied surface design techniques with various teachers including Hollis Chatelain, Lisa Gray/Jason Pollen, and Lara Swartz Smith. In 2017, she completed Jane Dunnewold’s two and a half year Master Class.

Linda has exhibited widely around the world and has received numerous awards. She is also the author of several publications. Linda is also a member of the Studio Art Quilters Association, Surface Design Association, and Artistry in Fibre, an SDA Exhibiting Group.
