ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Visions Museum of Textile Art is delighted to share this exhibition featuring work by artists who have served or are serving as President of Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA). SAQA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt defined as “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.” As a dynamic international community of over 4,000 artists, curators, collectors, and art professionals located around the world, SAQA offers exhibitions, resources, publications, and membership opportunities that promote the appreciation of the art quilt as fine art and supports their members’ artistic and professional growth.

As individuals and as a group, the SAQA Presidents are award-winning artists whose works have been exhibited internationally. They are also teachers, authors, and lecturers, sharing their passion and skill with artists and art enthusiasts around the world. In print, podcasts, television programs, and online platforms, they advance the public’s knowledge of and appreciation of the art quilt as fine art and inspire artists and the general public.

The quilts in this exhibition provide a marvelous introduction to the wide variety of styles, techniques, and aesthetic expressions in contemporary art quilting. In Lisa Ellis’s Effervescence, Katie Pasquini Masopust’s Rutenettet Norwegian, and Lisa Walton’s Everywhere, we see traces of traditional techniques reimagined in the artists’ minds. In Judith Content’s Sashiko Streams and the Pixeladies Super Cup, we wander from the ancient technique of shibori dyeing to the modern world of digitization. Mel Beach’s Follow Your heART and Yvonne Porcella’s Artistic Vision inspire the artist within us all. Deborah Boschert’s Waxing Crescent Endeavors and Sandra Sider’s Past Present: Occuli stop us in our tracks and make us look anew to understand what we truly see.
