ARTIST STATEMENT

Reading the Declaration of Sentiments and seeing the names of the women and men who signed it, I knew that this text had to be the anchor of my work. I envisioned a monument in fabric to the women who had sacrificed so much for all of us. I created Resistance to Tyranny is Obedience to God 25 years ago to celebrate the 75th anniversary of women’s suffrage. The title is a quote from Susan B. Anthony. I distinctly remember days in the library culling every book and article I could find on the suffrage movement. I was mesmerized by the strength and determination of the women participants, particularly Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth.
