Latine Entretejida / Interwoven and World Design Capital 2024

Visions Museum of Textile Art is proud to unveil Latine Entretejida/Interwoven, a program designed to foster connection and showcase Latine textile artists who are inspired by the unique culture that engulfs the San Diego/Tijuana border. Renowned artists Irma Poeter, Marisa Raygoza, Mely Barragan, and Olivia Arreguin present a diverse collection of quilts, sculptures, and fashion pieces, showcasing the beauty and complexity of their cultural textile art. Complementing the exhibition, Latine features engaging programming for all ages, including artist-led workshops and a community art project. Join us in celebrating this intersection of art and culture. Free exhibition, donations welcomed.

Visions Museum of Textile Art se enorgullece de presentar Latine Entretejida/Interwoven, un programa diseñado para fomentar la conexión y el entendimiento entre los pueblos de México y Estados Unidos. Las reconocidas artistas Irma Poeter, Marisa Raygoza, Mely Barragán y Olivia Arreguin presentan una colección diversa de colchas, esculturas y piezas de moda, que muestran la belleza y complejidad de su arte textil cultural. VMOTA newsletter recipients are invited to attend SDCC’s Crochet Club for free in March and April as long as any item made is donated for the United by Yarn event.

Bring your own hook & yarn!

No experience necessary, an avid crocheter will be on hand to help and offer guidance.

Explore the art of weaving in a uniquely hands-on and inspiring experience where we’ll guide you through the fundamentals needed to craft your own distinctive textile masterpiece. Over the course of 4 hours, you’ll have the opportunity to craft a one-of-a-kind textile piece using a simple loom. We provide all the materials you need including a basic wooden loom for you to take home.

How to up-cycle a piece of clothing with re-construction, appliqué, and embroidery

Learn how to upcycle a piece of clothing through applique and embroidery. This workshop will be directed towards people with sewing skills. Materials are not included. Bring to class 2 or 3 pieces of clothing, lace, notions, embroidery thread, sewing thread, beads, needles, hot glue gun with glue, and scissors.

Soft Sculpture Workshop with Mely Barragan

The cost will be $135 for VMOTA members and $145 for non-members.
Materials for students to bring: A new bed pillow, thread of various colors, sewing needles and scissors.

The class will be limited to 15 participants. In the event that the workshop is full when you attempt to register, please use our contact page to be put on a waiting list.

Using everyday materials, we will decontextualize their use and create a very personal sculpture. At the end of the workshop, we will create a collective installation to show our results which will be displayed at VMOTA for 1 week, through July 18th.

Explore the world of basketry in this fulfilling 4-hour workshop where you’ll learn the basics for creating your own basket using cotton rope. Dive into the hands-on process, learning the essentials of weaving and shaping as you craft a unique and functional piece. Multi-colored cotton rope and the base to create your basket will be provided.

Yarn Painting Workshop with Timothy Hinchliff

Create your own 5”-7” yarn painting. Join Timothy Hinchliff, master artist, for a three hour workshop in an exciting new medium of textile arts. Explore Soft Mosaic, a method of pressing finger weight yarns on to a soft art wax covered boards. Timothy will share the use of symbolism, color composition, and story while creating your own spirit journey of art.
