ARTIST STATEMENT

This large dimensional interpretation of birch bark fragments is part of an ongoing series. I continue to work on re-creating the beautiful remains I find as I walk through the forest. Even when a tree is no longer alive, it is creating life for the forest floor. As it breaks down, lichen and mosses grow, other small plants nestle into its interior, and new shoots put down roots. This work is created by digitally enlarging a small fragment, printing it out and stitching it heavily to enhance detail, and then shaping it and its companion fragment to create a diptych.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES

Digitally printed cotton from artist photo, batting, wire, backing, and thread.

Free motion stitching, thread painting, and shaping.
