ARTIST STATEMENT
This work is part of a series that reflects the textile traditions and importance of the Caribou in Arctic Canada. The long ‘stab’ stitches were meant to reflect the scraping action the women use when working with the skins to prepare them. The painted backgrounds on white cotton were inspired by the landscape colours – the blues, white and turquoise of the ice and snow and rust and copper of the skins.
MATERIALS
Acrylic painted background on cotton with painted hessian, sheers, copper metal shim and hand stitched with embroidery floss
