ARTIST STATEMENT

In villages throughout Oaxaca, Mexico, women weave and elaborately embroider vivid, multicolored textiles. Consuelo’s confident expression embodies her inner grace and dignity; her hands reveal the mastery of her craft.

MATERIALS

Cotton, bamboo batting, polyester thread, textile paint, embroidery thread

TECHNIQUES

Hand-painting, raw-edge appliqué, free motion machine stitching, hand-embroidering

Consuelo is based on a photograph by Eric Mindling, with permission granted, in his book, Oaxaca Stories in Cloth
