ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Ree Nancarrow’s work draws on her deep love of nature, extensive knowledge of the natural world, and deep concern about climate change. A long-time Alaska resident, Nancarrow has watched climate change’s rapid advance in the northern climes. She expresses her concerns about the climate in her work, creating images and marks by silk-screening, deconstructed silk-screening, stenciling, stamping, painting, dying fabric, and photographing. She combines these images digitally and intuitively, often creating new color palettes to better express the mood. The surface of her work is elaborately quilted. Her vision and understanding of the natural world has been expanded by working collaboratively for more than a decade with scientists, musicians, and other artists.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ree Nancarrow has spent her career as an artist exploring the natural world. She moved to Alaska in 1964 and has lived just outside Denali Park for over 50 years. An accomplished printmaker, weaver, spinner, and graphic designer, she began making art quilts in 1992 and found that textiles allowed a form of artistic expression that was not possible with other media. For the past decade, much of Nancarrow’s work has been in collaborative processes. She is a part of In Time of Change (ITOC), which offers opportunities for artists to work with scientists in selected fields for a year. She is also a member of the multi-disciplinary Elements Artist Group for which she has responded visually to original music composed in Denali National Park by the Composers in the Wilderness program. Over the course of her career, Nancarrow has exhibited her work in dozens of solo exhibitions, group shows, and invitationals. The recipient of numerous awards, her work is in permanent collections in Alaska and New York.
