ARTIST STATEMENT

Charlotte Woodward Pierce is my suffragist. I was intrigued about this youngest woman to attend the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention at age 18, and she was the only one of those women still alive when women won the right to vote in 1920. But at age 91, she was bedfast and unable to go vote. Other women depicted here are: Stacey Abrams; the Statue of Liberty; Rep. Shirley Chisholm; Hillary Clinton; Eleanor Roosevelt; and the 102 women of the 116th House of Representatives, elected in November 2018. These women of the new House of Representatives seemed perfect to go with my suffragist subject here, as they wore white on the night of the 2019 State of the Union Speech to honor the Suffragist Movement.
