ARTIST STATEMENT
Researching suffragist Ethel Williams of Detroit, Michigan, led me to discover many women of African-American descent who participated in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. I felt compelled to include many of these women who were forgotten due to the racism of the time. Since Black suffragists were not given their rightful place among the main Women’s Suffrage Movement marches, I chose to include as many as I could in this memorial quilt, paying homage to their valiant efforts in helping push through the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
