Elizabeth Cady Stanton authored The Declaration of Sentiments, which expanded on the Declaration of Independence by adding the words “and woman” or “and women” throughout, serving as a rallying cry for political, social, and economic equality for women. This document launched the formal beginning of the women’s suffrage and equal rights movements in the United States. My quilt is meant to illustrate the long climb from the moment that she gave that speech at Seneca Falls in 1848 to the year that Congress finally adopted the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote.
