ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Mely Barragán’s practice takes us into a multidisciplinary space where textiles, sculptures, and images create her multifaceted experiences. Her existence as a border artist has influenced the wide array of output in her work, using a mixture of language, materials, and resources. She collects and redistributes the values found on both sides of the border, at the same time creating new identities and traditions.
It all starts soft, from strictly geometrical compositions to woven knots and stuffed forms. Most of her work is textile-based, yet in some instances it hardens up, with the incorporation of more unnatural elements and electrical components. Her POST HUMAN ACCUMULATION and LASER WAND sculptures exemplify these processes, witnessing a metaphorical transformation that culminates in a literal portal of light bursting out of turbulence. Contrasting in size, SHALLOW WATER EMERGES TILL DAWN is a large-scale exploration of the feeling that engulfs one’s sense of being when adverse circumstances seem unscalable, a recreation of some type of threatening organism that grows towards the viewer. DOMESTIC LANDSCAPES II continues with her quest to find a new place through the creation of mental maps that guide the artist’s intentions through images composed of a variety of assembled spaces.
With this selection of works, we can see Barragán’s perspective on soft sculpture, where she doesn’t follow the conventional paths taken with textiles, yet never divests from thread culture.
La práctica de Mely Barragán nos lleva a un espacio multidisciplinario donde textiles, esculturas e imágenes crean sus experiencias multifacéticas. Su existencia como artista fronteriza ha influido en la amplia gama de productos de su trabajo, utilizando una mezcla de lenguaje, materiales y recursos, recoge y redistribuye los valores que se encuentran a ambos lados de la frontera al mismo tiempo que crea nuevas identidades y tradiciones.
Todo comienza suave, desde composiciones estrictamente geométricas hasta formas rellenas de nudos tejidos, la mayor parte de su trabajo es de base textil, pero en algunos casos se endurece, con la incorporación de elementos y componentes eléctricos más antinaturales. Sus esculturas POST ACUMULACIÓN HUMANA y VARITA LÁSER ejemplifican estos procesos, siendo testigos de una transformación metafórica que culmina en un portal literal de luz que brota de la turbulencia. Contrastante en tamaño, AGUAS POCO PROFUNDAS EMERGEN HASTA EL AMANECER es una exploración a gran escala del sentimiento que envuelve el sentido del ser cuando las circunstancias adversas parecen inescalables, una recreación de algún tipo de organismo amenazante que crece hacia el espectador. PAISAJES DOMÉSTICOS II continúa con su búsqueda de un nuevo lugar a través de la creación de mapas mentales que guían las intenciones de la artista a través de imágenes compuestas por una variedad de espacios ensamblados.
Con esta selección de obras, podemos ver la perspectiva de Barragán sobre la escultura blanda, donde no sigue los caminos convencionales tomados con el textil, pero nunca se deshace de la cultura del hilo.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mely Barragán is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist born and living in Tijuana, where she studied Graphic Design with a specialty in Visual Arts at the Universidad Iberoamericana. Her aesthetic objectives have focused on exploring the role of identity and of women within the power schemes of society. Her work questions the existing visual formulas, addresses the consequences of human and gender relations, and reflects on obsession, the absurd, the beautiful, the grotesque, nostalgia, time, the behavior of human relationships, etc. Playing with words and compositions, she is creating a fragmented atmosphere. Barragán has individual and group exhibitions in Mexico, the United States, China, and several European countries and has received multiple awards and scholarships. She has carried out artistic residencies in Cleveland, Beijing, Moscow, Monterrey, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, among others. She was co-director of TJINCHINA Project Space, which has carried out an interesting exchange of contemporary art between Tijuana and China. She was recently awarded The San Diego Art Prize 2023. Her work is part of public and private collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), the Tijuana Cultural Center (Cecut), Stanford University Libraries special collections, and Elias Fontes Collection, among others.
Mely Barragán es una artista contemporánea multidisciplinaria nacida y residente en Tijuana, donde estudió Diseño Gráfico con especialidad en Artes Visuales en la Universidad Iberoamericana. Sus objetivos estéticos se han centrado en explorar el papel de la identidad y de la mujer dentro de los esquemas de poder de la sociedad. Su trabajo cuestiona las fórmulas visuales existentes, aborda las consecuencias de las relaciones humanas y de género, y reflexiona sobre la obsesión, lo absurdo, lo bello, lo grotesco, la nostalgia, el tiempo, el comportamiento de las relaciones humanas, etc. Jugando con las palabras y las composiciones, está creando una atmósfera fragmentada. Barragán tiene exposiciones individuales y colectivas en México, Estados Unidos, China y varios países europeos y ha recibido múltiples premios y becas. Ha realizado residencias artísticas en Cleveland, Beijing, Moscú, Monterrey, Oaxaca y Chiapas, entre otros. Fue codirectora de TJINCHINA Project Space, que ha llevado a cabo un interesante intercambio de arte contemporáneo entre Tijuana y China. Recientemente fue galardonada con el Premio de Arte de San Diego 2023. Su obra forma parte de colecciones públicas y privadas como el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de San Diego (MCASD), el Centro Cultural Tijuana (Cecut), las colecciones especiales de las Bibliotecas de la Universidad de Stanford y la Colección Elías Fontes, entre otras.
