ARTIST STATEMENT

In August 2020, I entered the International African Quilt Challenge sponsored by Miriam Galadima Benson, owner of Quilt Africa Fabrics in Abuja, Nigeria. Participants were required to purchase 10 fat quarters of African fabric chosen randomly by Ms. Galadima Benson. The challenge was to use as many of the fat quarters as possible and to create a quilt measuring at least 50”x70”. The more fat quarters used, the more points awarded. I was able to use all 10 of my fat quarters. All 10 are depicted in her skirt.

This was my first attempt at creating a quilt using the fussy cutting technique and to my amazement I was picked as a runner up! It was even more of a thrill to listen to my quilt being discussed by the judges as it was displayed virtually worldwide before announcing the contest winners!
