Wildfire Summer

ARTIST STATEMENT
Wildfire Summer expresses the pain and grief felt by those of us who live in the mountains when the fires come in the summer. During the last two years, “fire season” lasted for months on end, from early summer until the winter snows. The eerie orange sky, the unbreathable air, the giant trees exploding into flame, and fires so hot they create their own weather… It isn’t what mountain summers are supposed to be like, is it? But here we are.The tree on this quilt is from a photo I took myself of a magnificent tree near our home in Mammoth Lakes. After years of drought and climate change, healthy trees like this one are increasingly rare and precious.
