ARTIST STATEMENT

Vyshyvka is the art of Ukrainian embroidery with bold, graphic motifs and distinct color palettes. Its designs and style of stitchery are geographically unique; a piece of embroidered cloth can be traced to any one of the 24 regions of Ukraine, sometimes even to a specific village.

My mother was a master embroiderer. I inherited a treasure trove of her embroideries. This is the sixth in a series in which her hand-work is the focal element. She has been gone for many decades, and yet, while working with these heirlooms, it feels very much like a collaboration.
