ARTIST STATEMENT
More than fifty years ago, for the 1965 Selma to Montgomery civil rights march, the Reverend Abraham Akaka shipped from Hawaii white leis as a symbolic affirmation of love and support for the leadership to wear. Senegales photographer Omar Victor Diop positions himself as the main protagonist in this recreation of what the late John Lewis called “the march for love.”
