San Diego Textile Scene

February 14 — June 20, 2026

About the Exhibition

Since its founding in 1985, Visions Museum of Textile Art has attracted a vibrant textile art scene in San Diego, California. In 2007, when volunteers organized a community build and created our permanent location in the Arts District Liberty Station in San Diego, California, our space invited new approaches to contemporary textile art.

This exhibition showcases the creativity and innovation of San Diego’s textile artists, remembering that the textile tradition in San Diego dates back to the indigenous Kumeyaay.

They were formerly known as the Diegueños, the former Spanish name applied to the Mission Indians living along the San Diego River. The Kumeyaay had land along the Pacific Ocean from the present Oceanside, California, in the north to south of Ensenada, Mexico, and extending east to the Colorado River.

Before the Spanish came to what is now known as San Diego, the native Kumeyaay people processed and used fibers from plants and animals to produce textiles.

The contemporary artists participating in this exhibition were selected from our 2026 art call and are: Jean Benelli, Monica Loss, Rebecca Smith, Nancy Lemke, Sue Britt, and Angela D’Amico, showing us different techniques and approaches to textile art.

About the Artists

  • Jean Benelli

Jean Benelli

Learning to sew was a family tradition, so it’s no surprise that textiles became my medium of choice, from wall quilts to sculpture to installations. I studied at Palomar Community College. My work has been shown widely locally, in Warren, RI, and El Paso, TX. My work has expanded from focusing on personal feminist subject matter to expressing the current political climate.

  • Sue Britt

Sue Britt

Sue Britt graduated from architecture school after studying garden and architecture design in China and Japan. Influences are seen in her work today. She worked in architecture, the Peace Corps, community development, motherhood, and teaching, each role satisfying a passion for creative problem solving. An experiment combining paper collage and weaving resulted in her paper tapestry technique which she continues to explore.

Fascinated by the ancient art of paper marbling and its connection to my Italian heritage, I began the process of marbleizing upcycled family linens and lace. This has connected me with the spectrum of the ocean’s colors and movement experienced over a long career at sea as well as my familial roots.

  • Nancy Lemke

Nancy Lemke

My mother and grandmother were skilled seamstresses, and I can’t remember when I didn’t know how to use a needle. I’ve always been creative, and when I hit my 40s, I began making art quilts. My subjects come from people I’ve known, events in my life, animals, and the state of the world. My pieces have been shown across the country.
