Japanese legend says that oarfish appear from the deep sea to warn humans of a coming earthquake or tsunami and two of them have washed upon the shores of San Diego this year. They grow around 50 feet long and tend to rise from the deep when their physical condition is weak, and they are often dead when they reach the surface.
