ARTIST STATEMENT

With this character, a curious game of words and identities arises. This character assumes a masculine identity, that of the male peacock, that nonetheless, with its exuberant display of feathers, shows characteristics closely associated with the social construct of the female gender. The tireless search for beauty and to achieve a desirable body are concerns associated with the female gender. It is a social mandate that a woman should always seek to present herself to be as ‘pretty’ and ‘attractive’ as possible. But if she appears ‘too’ desirable, she may incur certain risks, from being judged as someone intellectually or morally inferior, to being a victim of physical aggression.
