Liberty School Program
Visions Museum of Textile Art (VMOTA), in partnership with Liberty School, a program of the NTC Foundation, offers a transformative art program designed to introduce elementary school students to the art of quilt-making and textiles as an art form. The NTC Foundation, which established Liberty School in 2007, provides access to arts education for local children facing socio-economic challenges and those at risk for academic success.
VMOTA partners with schools like Dewey Elementary, where students, including many from military families, benefit from the program as a creative outlet that supports emotional well-being and academic growth. By engaging in art-making activities such as drawing, painting, design, and sewing, students process emotions, develop critical thinking skills, and foster creativity. VMOTA’s program integrates art-making with classroom learning and focuses on self-portraits, encouraging students to create original ideas using tools like pencils, scissors, fabric pens, needles, and thread.
Over the course of weekly sessions, students engage in drawing, painting, design, and sewing, ultimately producing their own quilted textile art pieces. The program culminates in a month-long display of their artwork at the museum, after which students take their completed pieces home, providing them with a sense of pride, accomplishment, and connection to the arts.
