ARTIST STATEMENT

I fell in love with the work of Scottish architect, designer, and  water colorist Charles Rennie Mackintosh when visiting Glasgow several years ago.   Among his many beautiful designs is the famous Mackintosh roseI started with a hand-drawn image of his rose which I embellished with shimmering metallic paints in golden hues. From there, I created a pattern which is somewhat “architectural in nature, loosely suggesting pointed roofs, arches, and soft curvesI wanted the piece to have texture (from wool and raw silk) and precision, like his work.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES

Materials: Raw silk, wool (hand-dyed by artist friend Linda Waddle), commercial batiks, solid cottons, rayon thread, metallic yarn, metallic paints.

Techniques: Precise piecing; hand-drawn rose fused, painted, and quilted; couching with metallic yarn; machine quilted using Bernina 820.
