ARTIST STATEMENT
Born into slavery in Maryland around 1820, Harriet Tubman escaped in 1849 but returned south to help others escape to freedom in northern cities prior to the Civil War. She continued to make this trip dozens of times on what has come to be known as the Underground Railroad; a difficult and dangerous trek by foot, often under the cover of night, often in winter to avoid detection.
Harriet Tubman continued to serve others until her death in 1913; her selflessness and bravery still inspire those involved in the advancement of civil and women’s rights.
