ABOUT THE ARTIST

Evan Tyler

Evan Tyler is an interdisciplinary artist born in Los Angeles, California, currently based in San Diego. His work is inspired by ancient things, mythology, architectures of the old world, and enduring traditional crafts, all of which allow him to harken back to another time and discover the practices of his ancestors.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Glitch 18 continues with the theme of taking the ancient technologies of natural dyeing and weaving and mimicking the technology of today, digital and, at times, erroneous.

Ancient things, be it mythology, architectures of the old world, enduring traditional crafts, or other synonymous methodologies, allow me to harken back to another time and discover the practices of my ancestors. The arts of natural dyeing and weaving are both diverse and expansive practices that were once a habitual custom done by so many around the world. Unfortunately, much of these media’s intricacies have been lost with the invention of synthetic dyes, widespread colonization, and industrialization as well. But, truthfully, my interest in this medium of expression began with an intimate desire to bridge the gap of my personal lineage. It is as if, when I dye or weave, I am healing, meditating, and making peace with a part of myself that seeks to repair the cords of a lost ancestral connection.
