ABOUT THE ARTIST
Patricia Álvarez’s work invites us to a moment of introspection, rather than to evade our perception through the abstraction of her pieces—as if they were, at once, a way of thinking and ‘fundamental objects of contemplation.’ Between 1979-1981, Patricia Alvarez studied at the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Lódz (Poland), during which time she developed a personal practice that rejected traditional processes of visual arts, particularly painting and sculpture, to experiment with other forms of creation such as sewing and weaving to create forms and textile works. During this time, Patricia Alvarez had the unique opportunity to learn from Magdalena Abakanowicz, a prominent figure in the New Tapestry movement of the late 1960s, which considered fiber and textiles as sculptural mediums to express emotions, ideas, energies, and concepts.
