Quilts Japan: The 17th Quilt Nihon

June 27 – October 10, 2026

About the Exhibition

Visions Museum of Textile Art is honored to be one of four U.S. venues to host the 17th Quilt Nihon, making a debut of this internationally recognized exhibition in San Diego.

This exhibit features award-winning, innovative works from the biennial competition of the Japanese Handicraft Instructor’s Association (JHIA). Quilt Nihon is the largest international quilt contest in Japan, and one of the most prestigious in the world.

For 50 years now, JHIA has promoted handcrafted arts in Japan by educating and training instructors in eight specialties: quilting, knitting, embroidery, lace making, painting, weaving, leatherwork, and flower art. The JHIA boasts 7,000 certified quilt instructors among its 12,000 members.

Its biennial Quilt Nihon exhibition is a unique opportunity to appreciate the creativity and complexity of these works of art. This year’s exhibition features award-winning and notable works in its selection.

Visions Museum of Textile Art selected a combination of pieces from the exhibition collection that reflect contemporary, traditional, and miniature quilts that captivate with their beauty, their creativity, and the spirit of this biennial in each quilt.

Japanese  Quilting History

The history of Japanese quilting is a testament to the country’s rich textile traditions and its adaptation to modern times. The introduction of Western-style quilting to Japan in the 19th century was influenced by American and European missionaries and teachers. These missionaries introduced patchwork and appliqué quilting styles, which were combined with Japanese traditions to create a unique look. The Japanese utilized traditional stitching patterns and fabrics to create quilts that conveyed a distinctly Japanese aesthetic, emphasizing simplicity, balance, and storytelling through the medium of fabric.

Japanese quilting is more than just an art form, it is a tribute to generations of labor, way of life, and lifestyle. The use of Sashiko and Boro stitching, along with other stitching techniques, gives Japanese quilting one-of-a-kind personality. These aspects increase visual attractiveness and mimic Japan’s historic courtship with textiles and environmental methods, creating tools that mitigate the environmental impact of human activity.

The Japan Handicraft Instructors’ Association (JHIA), which organizes this biennial, plays a crucial role in the history of quilting in Japan by promoting and educating quiltmaking through structured certification programs.

JHIA has significantly influenced the popularity of quilting among Japanese people with an estimated 2 to 3 million quiltmakers in Japan. The organization has been instrumental in introducing American quilts to Japan, leading to a flourishing contemporary quilt movement.
