ARTIST STATEMENT
Though Venice has flooded regularly for centuries, floods in recent years, due to the warming of the seas, have become quite horrifying. The waters intrude into Renaissance masterpieces, and the city is rapidly sinking. The middle ground of this piece shows Ed Hawkins’ Climate Warming stripes, recording annual average temperatures, specific to Italy, since about 1900. The water is beginning to submerge the buildings facing the Venetian lagoon.
