ARTIST STATEMENT

In the 1960’s, my Chicago cousin told me that “all California girls had a tan, long straight blonde hair, and surfed.” She got that from the Beach Boys. Growing up in Southern California, I got to see Huntington Beach transform from a sandy beach to a commercial venture. What remained unchanged was the Southern California winter skies. Often sunsets are turquoise, purple, orange, and yellow all at once.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES

The background is created by selecting fabric that contrasts with tiles that are individually cut and placed on a grid to create a textured background. Each tile is backed with fusible glue, heat set, and then stitched in place. The silhouette is hand-cut, fused, and stitched to the background.

Commercial cotton fabrics embellished with multi-colored metallic thread.
