ARTIST STATEMENT
The Methane Bubbles series interprets the results of permafrost melt at the bottom of ponds in the winter Arctic. The thawed vegetation becomes available as food for the one-celled organisms that produce methane. They do not need oxygen to survive, so they continue to feed during the winter. These bubbles rise to the surface of the lake, encountering ice on the surface, and freeze in beautiful, abstract patterns.
