ARTIST STATEMENT

Every Spanish lime tree I had in my yard never bore fruit. I would cut one down and plant another with the same result. A neighbor advised me not to cut it down, but to let it grow. It was still too young to bear fruit. I listened to him, and to my surprise, it bore fruit. This is what motivated me to make my first quilt and call it My Spanish Lime Tree is Bearing Fruit.

Chak pye kenep mwen genyen nan lakou m, yo pa janm ka donnen. Mwen te oblije koupe l, pou m te ka plante yon lot pye. Pye kenep sa a tout pat vle donnen, pandan mwen te pral koupe tout, yon vwazin di m, “Non, pa koupe ti pye kenep la.” Mwen tande l; mwen pat koupe l. Epi a tout sipriz mwen, kenep la donnen. Se rezon sa a ki fe motive m pou m te fe premye tablo m nan, mwen rele l Kenep Mwen ap Donnen.
