Quilt Visions 2022

October 15 to December 30, 2022

As humans, we ponder age-old questions of identity and community. Who am I? Where do I fit in? For generations, people have turned to philosophy, science, spiritual wisdom, poetry, and art for answers and solace. We may now also turn to the artworks of Quilt Visions 2022 as we consider our sense of place and self.

Take for instance, Holly Cole’s Beating of Wings. Cole’s black birds seem to be cutting themselves out of the sky, leaving feathered patches of white behind them as they unleash their potential. Victoria Findlay Wolfe’s Ode to Evening, in contrast, provides us with a well-defined, reassuring location that is as much mood as destination. Wolfe’s cool, serene shapes and colors encourage us to breathe and be present.

More tangible expressions of place and self can be found in Deborah Weir’s elegant reverie, Shibori Dye Day, and in Karen Schulz’s engaging journey, Road Trip. Whether we are plunging our hands into Weir’s water or following the path with Schulz, we are off to places of discovery.

We may also find ourselves in the exhibition’s portraits and self-portraits. We may Dance or Go Crazy with Jean Herman or calm our spirits with Be Still, My Fluttering Heart by Phil Jones. Other works offer more interior portraits, such as Threads of a Story by Viviana Lombrozo and Field Notes: No. 4 Excavating Truth by Libby Williamson. These works urge us to unpack the stories we tell ourselves and perhaps even upset our internal equilibria en route to a new point of stability.

All of the artists of Quilt Visions 2022 draw us into their perceptions and invite us to reflect on who we are in time and space. The age-old conversation continues! Visions Museum of Textile Art congratulates all of the artists and is honored to exhibit these works.
