ARTIST STATEMENT

“Mama” Efua Dorkenoo (1949 – 2014) was a real-life Super-Hero who safeguarded the health and wellbeing of millions of girls and women by working to end the practice of Female Genital Mutilation. All forms of FGM involve cutting female genital tissue and usually result in lifelong painful impairment. Through her efforts, anti-FGM legislation has been established and women in many places now have guidance and support. Her spirit lives on and her fight continues as a growing number of organizations are working to make sure her dream of a world without FGM comes true.
