ARTIST STATEMENT
Natives did not own the land, however they could earn money from the land as a result of grazing leases, oil drilling and other mineral extraction. Natives could not keep that money as the government had deemed them incapable of keeping track of it, so the government “kept it” for them. The money was never accounted for. Over a hundred years later Elouise Cobell (Blackfoot) — Yellow Bird Woman began to question where that money was. She entered into a lawsuit that eventually yielded a 3.4 billion dollar settlement in 2010 for all Indian Peoples who had not received their trust money.
